SIR Visa

The SIR visa was introduced last year for people who could not meet the points test for a Skilled Independent visa which requires 120 points. This is a 3 year provisional visa that requires you to be sponsored by a nominated Australian State. Under the SIR category you only require 100 points and then the sponsoring  State gives you 10 extra points in order to meet  the 110 passmark.

The visa has required a 60 point occupation until now. Western Australia is participating in this visa category and as such has developed skilled lists especially for this visa. There are 9 regions and each has its own list of skills shortages. Some regions are now considering accepting 50 point occupations but as these lists will be constantly revised it is best to contact us for further information.

  Thailand Work Visa

Minister for Immigration, Senator Amanda Vanstone, confirmed that a Work and Holiday (W&H) Visa arrangement between Australia and Thailand came into effect from 01 September.

‘The new arrangement means that 18 to 30 year-old Thai and Australian nationals who have already completed their university education will be eligible to apply for W&H visas for stays of up to 12 months in Australia or Thailand,’ Senator Vanstone said.

‘The W&H program allows young overseas professionals to get to know Australia and its people while affording Australians the opportunity to improve their understanding of other cultures through undertaking working holidays overseas.’

Any work undertaken must be incidental to the main purpose of holidaying in Australia or Thailand and W&H visa holders are only permitted to work with the one employer for a maximum of three months.

The Work and Holiday visa is different to a ‘Working Holiday’ visa arrangement, in that it requires an applicant to have the support of their government, hold tertiary qualifications and speak functional English.
